In 2003, when Cate was seven years old, she was selected for sponsorship, but only remembers her photo being taken. When she went to school, she lived with her grandma in a family of five relatives. Her mother died in 1998, her father in 2001. One day she asked grandma, ‘How did my mum die when I was two years old?’ Grandma just burst into tears.

Every day she started walking to school at 5.30am. It was a five-mile journey and she had no shoes until much later when her sponsor bought her a pair. However, the hardest thing for Cate was returning home every day because the family had no beds, no blankets, no nets and very little food.

One day her sponsor, John, visited her family. It was a memorable time. He said, ‘Cate we are so proud of you. Your reports are very promising and although we struggle to pay your school fees we will continue until you finish your education.’ These words inspired her to work hard, stay focused and made her feel she could succeed to become someone special.

Cate, now 25, says, ‘The financial and material support and sponsorship were the major drivers to my success and passion to be an accountant.’

Cate graduated from university with a 1st Class Honours degree in accountancy. For the past three years, she has been working in the KDP accounts department on a reduced wage while also studying for further qualifications as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Because she is on the road to success, she wanted to help another needy student. For the past two years, she has been supporting a student in Trust High School. However, as if this wasn’t enough, she talked to her aunt and together they went to the girl’s home. Cate invited the student to move in with her because, as she said, ‘I don’t see any reason why I should stay in my house all alone’.
