– Fred Mukuza, KDP Business Operations manager
‘My grandmother was a very special person in all ways. She was a provider, a protector, and a pillar of strength. My father had died earlier in my life and my mother’s life moved on, so I went to live with my grandmother. After that Christmas in my grandmother’s house was always the best time of the year. A new shirt or a new pair of shorts for church, but of course they were cast-offs. But I didn’t care, they were gifts from my hero, my grandmother.
She always served us, only on that day in the year, a little rice and chicken. But when I was 11 years old, I had a very different Christmas. An intruder hit my hero grandmother on the head with a hard metal object. She was murdered just 2 days before Christmas. Now there was no rice, no chicken no new cast-off clothes, no going to church and no sounds of joy or laughter. We were two small boys and one girl she had cared for, and she was the world to us.
Now we had no one to defend us, only God the defender of the fatherless. But that year we lost the joy of Christmas.’
