‘I was 9 years old when I had a most unusual Christmas. This was the only day in a year when we had chicken and soda. A month before Christmas, I was so looking forward to that day. When I went to play with my friends, I talked about it. They would tell me their parents were buying them new dresses. I kept saying at least I will have 4 sodas to drink.
My parents were separated so my brother and I went to our uncle’s home to celebrate Christmas with our cousins. I didn’t expect a gift as my dad had remarried and my mum had no money to buy me a new dress. Then, three days before Christmas I went sick with malaria. I was very ill, and I spent Christmas in bed. I had no appetite for soda or chicken. I was encouraged to take a little chicken soup, but it was the saddest Christmas I ever had.
That day I learnt a lesson to not focus my mind on Christmas, but to take each day as it comes. We have a Baganda proverb ‘Never be anxious for anything before it happens’.’
