WHY SPONSOR CHILD?

In February 2000 we met with the 32 community leaders of the Kabubbu Development Project (KDP) who asked us to help them with the development of their village.

A medical clinic, a school and clean water were some of the most vital needs they had for their future health, and education of the hundreds of children, many orphaned, living there.

We asked the KDP to prioritise their needs. Finally, after much discussion, they concluded that the most urgent need in their community was the 400 orphans living among them.

These orphans made an enormous drain on their meagre resources. Because no proper education was available in their area the future of the village was in jeopardy as the orphans grew up. Their desperation for food and clothing would mean them either finding their way to Kampala where they would become 'street children' living off prostitution or crime, or they would seek to steal from the community in Kabubbu to meet their basic needs.

We guarantee that 100% of your donation received by Quicken Trust will be used, in full, in Kabubbu. Our administration costs are separately funded. Please note comment on Gift Aid on our donations page.

TO TEACH A CHILD IS TO TOUCH A LIFE FOREVER

To Teach A Child

In 2000 Kabubbu community leaders impressed on us that education is the key to the future of their community. They needed a school. Those desperately needing help were the orphans who had no-one to pay their school fees.

Quicken Trust agreed to begin seeking a solution. By July 2000 twelve families in England had agreed to sponsor an orphan. They were transported daily to a school about 10 kilometres from Kabubbu. The school provided them with education, medicine, food and a uniform. It also taught them skills needed to utilise the land and in carpentry, sewing and cooking.

This was only a short-term solution. In the long term a school was needed in Kabubbu. Another charity, Ambassadors of Hope, had already constructed many schools in Uganda as partnership projects. They were skilled in this work and had visited Kabubbu to assess the need there and reported that there was a definite need and they were prepared to partner with us and the local community in its construction.

In July 2000 we found a six-acre plot of land. The villagers were making bricks by mixing mud and water and placing them to dry in the sun and then fired. They slowly gathered a supply of sand ready for construction. There was a need for resources to supply the things they couldn't provide because they lacked the finances. Cement, corrugated sheeting for the roof, paint and so on. The villagers were prepared to partner with their labour and local skills.

Within a year concerned individuals in the UK had raised £20,000 and in August 2001 a 72 hour marathon "Bike Ride to Uganda" on static exercise bikes took place in Hailsham, East Sussex over the August Bank Holiday weekend. The cyclists covered the 4,000 miles between Hailsham and Kabubbu. The event was supported by hundreds of people and raised £20,000 enabling the school to be built.

The British High Commissioner to Uganda, Tom Phillips, along with local Members of Parliament and area leaders plus 1,000 local people who enjoyed a traditional feast, opened the school on 28th March 2002 with 60 children.

NURSERY SCHOOL

Nursery School

The start of education is in Nursery School with two classes of children aged 4 and 5 who learn very basic skills including simple reading and writing. We are encouraging the use of play, a concept not well used in rural Africa, where every form of education is geared towards retention of knowledge and reproducing that knowledge in examinations.

Children who start in nursery have a far better opportunity in the learning cycle as they gain a strong foundation. It is an essential start.

Our Nursery School has met in cramped conditions with two groups in one classroom but a generous couple getting married asked that all wedding gifts should go to building a special Nursery School facility. It opened in February 2008

You may start child sponsorship with a child in nursery education where they will benefit from a very secure educational foundation. Nursery School last two years and sponsorship is £20 per month and we would ask you to consider continuing sponsorship with that child through primary education.

Please, can you help provide more orphans and destitute families with a vital nursery education - the key to the future for these children?

KABUBBU COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL

Primary School Children

There are 400+ orphans in Kabubbu and many families so destitute that they cannot afford the school fee for even one of their children to receive a primary education. They have no income stream as they live on 'less than a $ a day'.

Opened in February 2002 for the 400+ orphans the school started with 60 sponsored children. Currently around 375 of the 500 children at KCPS are sponsored. They receive a full education, two meals a day, school uniform and free healthcare. This equals £20 per month per child sponsorship.

Thanks to generous sponsors they are enjoying an education that they could not afford.

Primary education lasts for seven years. If you can help support a child we would ask you to consider doing so for the duration of their education so that they can benefit fully.

The cost of running the school with thirteen teachers and necessary resources is currently around £4,000 each month. It has all the basic resources needed to educate the children but needs many more to broaden the children's education.

Please, can you help provide more orphans and destitute families with a vital education - the key to the future for these children?

TRUST HIGH SCHOOL

Secondary School Children

We had not intended to progress to a secondary school because of the substantial costs involved - many times greater than for a primary school.

But what do you do when a child has successfully completed sponsored primary education and gained a positive education that puts them among the highest educational achievers in the District? Tell them to go back to growing enough vegetables to live from?

Trust High School was opened in February 2006 by the Minister of Education, Hon Geraldine Bitamazire, for those orphans completing their primary education at KCPS. It started with 90 children many of them from fee-paying families from Kampala who had heard about the excellent examination results of the primary school.

Currently around 200 children attend of whom almost half will be sponsored. They receive a full education, two meals a day, school uniform and free healthcare. This equals £30 per month sponsorship because of the greater cost of necessary resources than for the primary school.

Thanks to generous sponsors they are enjoying an education that they could not afford.

Secondary education lasts for six years. If you can help support a child we would ask you to consider doing so for the duration of their education so that they can fully benefit.

The building work is on-going with installation of a satellite broadband link, science laboratories, a computer suite and a full library. Dormitories are being built for children of fee-paying Kampala residents.

Please, can you help provide more orphans and destitute families with a vital education - the key to the future for these children?

COLLEGE & UNIVERSITY

Uganda is a growing economy and there is a continual demand for highly qualified personnel. College and university graduates are needed. As Kabubbu develops there will be a growing demand for highly qualified people in many aspects of management at both line management and director level. The hope is that the orphan children of Kabubbu will gain the necessary qualifications to serve their community in the future. Already some educationally able students are being sponsored in college and university from special reserves but as the secondary school children prosper in their education there will be many more attending higher and tertiary education. Please, can you help provide more orphans to complete a vital college or university education - the key to the future for these children?

VOCATIONAL TRAINING

Not every child will have the educational capability required for College or University. But they will all have potential to use their unique skills to provide for their future. A vocational training programme is underway. Currently training is offered in furniture making, general woodwork, bicycle repair and best practices in animal husbandry and crop maximisation. Additional vocational training is planned for plumbing, household electrical wiring, bricklaying and general house construction. Please, can you help provide more orphans and destitute families with vocational training - the key to the future for so many non-academic children?
