Keren touched by ‘The Kabubbu Effect’…
Wednesday afternoon saw our group of volunteers escorting fifty primary school #KabubbuKids to the village trading centre as part of our literacy project. The air was filled with song and laughter as we wound our way down the road to greet the shopkeepers. Many photos were taken and lots of questions asked – an experience that will hopefully stay with the children for the rest of their lives.
The volunteers’ development challenge introduced us to the lovely Rasheed and Betty and led to much hilarity as we transported three chickens in our minibus and caused some consternation when we took a trip on the back of a boda-boda. The outward journey had me clinging on for dear life, whilst the return saw me waving like the queen! Being able to provide some life-changing gifts for Betty and Rasheed was a very special moment for all of us.
There were many more experiences that made my trip to Kabubbu so extraordinary; these have left me with an emotionally unforgettable ‘Kabubbu Effect’.
In the classrooms, the dedication of James and his teacher colleagues was reflected in the willingness of the children to learn and participate, and in the determination of Trust High School students working hard to achieve a scholarship to the Pestalozzi International Village.
In the village, my abiding memory is the constant happiness of the villagers of Kabubbu in the face of hardship, and the lovely Chrissie who worked alongside us in the fields. Whilst at the Kabubbu Resort Centre, the very hospitable Doreen and her excellent team worked so tirelessly to make us feel at home.
And in the UK, the lovely people that I met at the Quicken Trust office before and after the trip, and my fellow Kabubbu volunteers who provided such friendship, humour and support through the ups and downs of our experience.
But none of these experiences would have been possible were it not for the incredible hard work and dedication of Geoff and Geraldine who have given so much of their life for the people of Kabubbu. I can never thank them both enough for changing my life forever.
